Celebrating 70 Years of Grit, Growth, and the People Who Made It Possible
This article reflects on the 70-year history of Swanton Welding Company, highlighting the people, leadership, and values that shaped its growth. It explores how resilience, innovation, and a strong workplace culture helped the company navigate change, expand its capabilities, and build a lasting legacy across generations.
Seventy years in business does not happen by accident.
It’s not luck that carries a company through decades of change, uncertainty, and growth. It is people. It is grit. It is the kind of pride in your work that does not clock out at the end of the day.
For Swanton Welding Company, 70 years is more than a milestone. It’s a story that began in 1956 with one man and a vision. That story continues today through generations of leadership, employees, and a shared commitment to a job well done.
Where It All Began
In 1956, George Kern returned home after serving in the U.S. Navy in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. Like many of his generation, he came back ready to build something of his own.
What he built was Swanton Welding & Machining, a one-man welding operation focused on serving the local farm community.
At the time, no one could have predicted what that small shop would become. From the very beginning, there was something different about it. There was a focus on innovation, a commitment to customers, and a willingness to do whatever it took to get the job done.
Those values shaped the early years and became the foundation for everything that followed.

A Legacy of Leadership
In 1973, George brought on his son-in-law, Norman D. Zeiter, as the company’s first employee. By 1980, the business had grown to six employees, a clear sign that something meaningful was taking shape.
In 1985, Norm purchased the company and began leading it into a new era.
Under his leadership, Swanton Welding evolved from a small shop into one of the most capable custom fabrication operations in the Midwest and Southeast. Growth was not only about square footage or equipment. It was about vision. Norm understood how to scale without losing what made the company so special.
Both George and Norm shared something that cannot be taught. They had a genuine love for the business. They built more than metal structures. They built culture, relationships, and opportunity.
Their legacy continues today in every part, every project, and every person who walks through the doors.
Built by People Who Care
Ask what makes Swanton Welding different, and the answer has always been the same. It is the people.
From the beginning, leadership understood that a company is only as strong as the people behind it. That belief is reflected in the team that has been built over the decades.
It is not unusual to find employees who have been with the company for 25, 30, even 35 years. That kind of longevity speaks volumes. It reflects a workplace where people feel valued, where their contributions matter, and where they can build a career instead of simply holding a job.
Today, that legacy continues through a workforce that blends experience with fresh perspective. Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z work side by side, sharing knowledge, solving problems, and pushing each other to improve.
Growing Through Change
Seventy years of business means facing challenges and overcoming them.
Swanton Welding has weathered economic downturns, including the Great Recession. It has adapted through industry shifts, increased global competition, and the challenges brought on by COVID. It has navigated uncertainty that has forced many companies to close their doors.
Through it all, one thing has remained constant. Resilience. There is strength that comes from experience and from knowing you have faced difficult times before and found a way forward. That mindset has carried the company through decades of change. There is also a strong sense of gratitude. Faith, perseverance, and the people behind the work have made a lasting impact on the company’s ability to endure and grow.
A Story of Growth
What started as a one-man operation has grown into a multi-facility, highly capable fabrication company. Over the years, Swanton Welding has expanded its footprint and capabilities in meaningful ways:
- Growth from a small shop to hundreds of thousands of square feet of production space.
- Expansion across Ohio and into Georgia.
- Continued investment in advanced equipment, automation, and technology.
- Strategic acquisitions to better serve customers.
- Ongoing improvements to meet the demands of modern fabrication.
From beam lines and heavy fabrication facilities to advanced lasers and training centers, each step forward has been guided by a commitment to continuous improvement.
The Heart Behind the Work
There is a story that captures the spirit of this company in a simple but powerful way.
When reflecting on what his dad would be doing today if he were still here, Norm, President of Swanton Welding (son of Norman D Zeiter) the answer was clear. He would be sitting in the office. Still showing up for the company he loved.
That level of dedication cannot be manufactured. It is passed down through leadership, culture, and example. That same spirit is still present today.
There is a deep sense of pride among the team, not only in the work itself but in being part of something meaningful.
Looking Ahead to the Future
The next generation of employees in the shops and offices are bringing new energy, new ideas, and a strong willingness to learn and collaborate. Their creativity and passion are helping shape the future of the company.
Swanton Welding continues to move forward with the same mindset it started with. Stay innovative. Stay customer-focused. Keep building.
Celebrating 70 Years and Beyond
Seventy years represents thousands of completed projects, countless challenges that were overcome, and generations of people who have contributed to something meaningful.
It’s been a lot of early mornings, long days, problem solving, teamwork, and a commitment to doing things the right way, even when it is not the easiest way.
Most of all, it represents the people. The founders who started it. The leaders who helped it grow. The employees who continue to show up every day and give their best.
And while Swanton Welding Company takes pride in its history, the focus remains on the future.
Because this story is still being written.
