Double Drop Trailer
Swanton Welding Company was contracted to construct a double drop trailer for a client in Ottawa, OH. The project took under two months after a mid-July 2024 start, with completion in early September 2024.
A double drop trailer, also known as a lowboy trailer, transports oversized loads considered too large for a standard trailer on a flat deck. Double drop trailers have a lower deck section that can “drop” below the trailer axles, creating two levels.
With the front of the trailer higher than the back, the transport system has more legal height clearance and can transport materials up to 12 feet tall without issue. The drop also reduces the risk of the load toppling since the weight is closer to the ground and can make the weight distribution more secure.
Trucks that haul double drop trailers have improved handling over other styles of heavy-load transport.
The client provided us with all the materials needed and ready for fabrication in this fabrication. Swanton Welding used these materials to form, fabricate, and weld. In this project, we needed to use high tensile strength wire for the welding process.
The primary material used in this project was a 110 XF plate. Swanton Welding used press braking and welding to complete the project, but there were no finishing details per the client’s request.
When finished, the double drop trailer was 52’ long, 102” wide, and 60” high, weighing approximately 10,000 pounds. The completed project was shipped to the client in Ottawa, OH.
Our Certified Welding Inspector, who signs off on all Swanton Welding projects, makes sure that this fabrication met all the heavy-load transport standards and would suit the client’s needs.
