Inclined Plate Clarifier

Swanton Welding Company recently completed fabrication of an Inclined Plate Clarifier with an integrated Thickening Tank, a large-scale build designed for industrial wastewater treatment. We delivered the final assembly to Blythewood, South Carolina, where it will be used to remove metals and paint solids from wastewater streams.

This project kicked off on December 3rd and was finalized on April 2nd, demonstrating Swanton’s ability to manage complex builds over multi-month timelines. The finished clarifier measured 25 feet long, 13 feet wide, and 24 feet high, with an empty weight of 32,000 pounds. Once filled with water, the system weighs over 145,000 pounds.

Constructed primarily from A36 carbon steel, with selective use of 316 stainless steel components, this clarifier required a range of advanced fabrication processes. Swanton Welding’s team used laser cutting, press braking, plate and angle rolling, beam and angle line fabrication, machining, and saw cutting throughout the build. Each component was then brought together in a full shop test assembly.

To meet the functional requirements of submersion and long-term durability, the tank received an SP10 near-white metal blast followed by a phenalkamine epoxy coating. The coating system was specifically chosen for its performance in underwater applications.

Quality and accuracy were top priorities from start to finish. The project included extensive testing and inspection: weld inspection, paint inspection, dye penetrant testing, and hydro testing, all performed in-house before shipment. These additional steps highlight Swanton’s commitment to delivering heavy-duty projects that stand up to real-world demands.

This clarifier project demonstrates our capacity to fabricate and deliver large, highly specialized industrial equipment nationwide, regardless of size, weight, or complexity.
